Mr. Toledano

Phillip Toledano‘s website first came to my attention when I tried searching for photography projects dealing with video games. He took a series of portraits showing the expressions people make when they play video games. It wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, so I moved on and continued my search…
More recently, these photos from his “Hope & Fear” project were brought to my attention. Holy wow. So creepy and beautiful, like something that belongs in a Guillermo Del Toro film.
His portfolio is very eclectic and full of interesting bits. One of my favorites was his “Days with My Father” project. It broke my heart a little, as most of the photos are accompanied with some narrative about how his father has dealt with growing old.
And, if you love abandoned buildings as much as any other boy photographer*, you’ll love his “Bankrupt” series.

* I’ve always thought taking pictures of abandoned buildings was the male equivalent of girls taking pictures of their feet.

Phillip Toledano’s work is sick! I had an assignment in a photo history class a few years ago in which we randomly drew a photographer’s name and had to create a photograph in the style of their work, and I drew him. My photo was based of his “Marks” series about how impressions on skin can be like temporary photo paper, leaving impermanent traces of our day on our body. (can’t seem to find it on his site anymore :( )
His “Days with my Father” project brought me to tears just now…
I saw “Days with my Father” last summer, and it made me cry. His work is amazing.
