I seem to have struck gold this year with DIY brides and weddings that’re oozing with fun. Harper and Wes were no exception when they were married at the White House in Redding, Calfornia. Harper is a crafty gal that poured her heart and soul into this one day. There were game booths, sack races and even a non-stop free photobooth.
But, inevitably, her tank of crafty magic started running on Empty. And when Harper ran out of ideas? “My mom jumped in and blew my mind with her mad skills.” I love it! I may be arty, but I’m definitely not crafty. Harper, her mom and all the friends & family that helped along the way blew my mind when I set foot in the venue. I felt so lucky to be the wedding photographer for this event — there was just so much good stuff to shoot.
True to form, the ladies were hours into their primping when the men decided it was time to learn how to tie a tie.
Everyone dealt with the day’s stress in different ways. The men? They smoked tobacco from pipes given to them by Wes. The ladies ate cotton candy… and didn’t smudge their lipstick. Woo!
For most couples a wedding is the symbol of many things… Eternal love, lifetime devotion and, eventually, the beginning of a new branch on the family tree. For Harper and Wes, though, their new family began on this day.
I couldn’t've been the only one clutching my heart every time Harper’s daughter, Luci, ran around looking for Wes to give him a hug, or weasel a quick dance out of him; her new daddy. There were a lot of “Awww’s!” being sighed that day.

I love these! So much color and you did such a great job workin’ the manual mode. :-) I can’t wait to shoot my first artsy/crafty wedding. They’re so inspiring!
Btw, if you’re ever looking for a 2nd shooter when Chris isn’t around, I’d love to snap away with you. Very serious about that….even if you are hellsa far away. ;-)
Hey you! That is such a good idea, I don’t know why I never thought of it considering I seem to shoot at least one Shasta/Humboldt wedding a year, which is only a teensy bit hellsa far away. Sweet! :)
And Andrew and I could always use an excuse to visit Portland….I imagine it’s a magical place with lazy cats around every corner, crazy artists doing their crazy art thing, and tiny little horses tied to curbs all over the city. What could be better?! lol
Haha! That’s Portland all right – pretty much exactly why we moved here. :)

These are fabulous, Kim! And I actually just shot my last wedding entirely in Manual as well! It was actually a lot better- I found I took LESS shots than I normally do because I could get the settings right the first time around and I was very satisfied with the outcome. Congratulations on Manual mode and these BEAUTIFUL wedding photos. This whole post is absolutely breathtaking.
Thanks Sara! I shot with two cameras since I didn’t have a 2nd shooter, so I still fired off a pantload of frames, but it was definitely (ironically) faster to get it right since I KNEW what my settings should be. The camera doesn’t always know best, especially in tricky lighting. Admittedly I shoot in AP a lot of the time because I’m too lazy and scared. Hooray for getting over our fears, eh? :)
