    In the Studio with Harlowe

Last weekend Harlowe and the Great North Woods scheduled a few days to record with vibe cop Matthew Morgan at the legendary Jackpot! Recording Studio in Southeast Portland, OR. Being asked to stop by and document part of the process was both thrilling and a challenge all wrapped up in one.

Despite their new location, it still felt an honor to be in the studio that has recorded so many amazing artists in the past — Elliot Smith, R.E.M. and M. Ward to name just a few.

And double the honor to witness the live recording of Harlowe’s debut LP; the beginning of something tremendous.

The only thing that was truly challenging about this session were the walls. I’m pretty sure that shade of green next to those purple and orange squares will haunt me in my dreams. Luckily, the boys did a good job vibing the place out with christmas lights, books and other familiar things they brought from home.

Though things are a bit up in the air at this point, they hope to have their album released by spring/summer 2013.

    Harlowe & The Ranger Station

Emilee Booher for the Willamette Weekly recently got in touch with Harlowe & The Great North Woods to film a music video for Live Reel, a new addition to the Local Cut Music Blog. I’ve been sitting on these photos for a while, eagerly anticipating the video release. Now I can finally share with you some of the behind-the-scenes action from our evening together.

The video was set inside the Ranger Station, a hand-crafted cabin made from reclaimed materials that sits in an undisclosed North Portland location. I was actually blindfolded when we drove there (not really, but if I told you anymore they’ll have to kill me). Had I known it was going to be such a feast for the eyes I would’ve brought all of the cameras, but I think I managed to capture some decent moments for posterity with what I had.

Being invited to hang out during this filming was such a treat. I had a front row seat to what felt like my own private concert, and the gracious owners of the Ranger Station provided us with an endless supply of cinnamon-orange spiced iced coffee. Harlowe performed 9 takes of their fan favorite, “Roses,” and I didn’t get sick of it for even a second. I think that says a lot about this band, and this song. It’s one I could listen to on repeat for an entire week, and still want more.

You can watch the final video by heading over to the Local Cut. Thanks to Emilee and Michael for lending their talents, as well as the owners of the Ranger Station for their beautiful space.

I’ve been saving the last of these photos for today so that I could cash in on one last shout-out for the show tonight. Harlowe and the Great North Woods will be playing alongside Great Wilderness at the Doug Fir Lounge, one of my favorite venues in Portland, OR. The show starts at 9:00pm, and tickets are only $5! Great music in a great venue at a cheap price — what more could you ask for?

How about the rest of the photos from my session with the Harlowe boys? All right. I’ll stop peddling music and give you what you came here for: beautiful photos of some of the coolest guys I’ve ever known.

All photos were shot on film with the Nikon F100 and Mamiya RZ67. Enjoy!

I hope you guys aren’t tired of looking at these cute boys frolicking in snowy meadows yet. :) This will be the last post for Harlowe and the Great North Woods until I get their film scanned, which includes some very experimental shooting with Chris’s new Lomokino. That front has been a little delayed since I came down with Bronchitis last week, but I’m back at the desk and ready for a scan party!

Also, a bit of official news: Harlowe will be playing at the Doug Fir Lounge on March 14th, alongside another wonderful Portland act, Great Wilderness. Tickets are only $5! So if you live in Portland and have been curious about Harlowe, now would be a great time to check them out!

All right, as promised, here are the (mostly) candid photos I snapped of the band out in Mt. Hood. Enjoy, and have a happy weekend!

Harlowe and the Great North Woods // Portland Band Photographer

Before I get to the candid stuff I wanted to share the rest of our promo shots from my day in the mountains with Harlowe and the Great North Woods. I know the snowball frames are probably going to be everyone’s favorite, but I’m particularly fond of the portraits I took of each member on their own, sans snow in the face. A rare moment of peace amongst a group of rowdy boys, if you will. :)

The last photo is actually completely candid, but I couldn’t stop myself from using it as a segue into the next post, which will be comprised mostly of photojournalist style portraits (ie., snowball fight!).

Take a Portland, OR folk band, add a photographer and her whole camera cache, load them up on eggs, bacon and coffee, throw them into an unmarked white van headed for Mt. Hood and this is just a taste of what you’ll get.

These are some bokeh panoramas that we fired off during the day, but there is much more goodness to come, including medium format and 35mm film, as well as everyone taking turns getting blasted by snowballs. Stay tuned!
